Flood Control

Purpose

Flood Control’s main objectives are to maintain the parish levees, parish roads, clear and clean ditches, work with Army Corps of Engineers on levees, dig ditches, clear drainage pipes with a Vac Truck, run the Empire Floodgate, operate, and maintain the drainage pumping stations tasked with removing stormwater from within the levee system.

The drainage pumping system of Plaquemines Parish consists of 16 major sites throughout the parish, most of which have multiple pumps.

Operators work eight-hour days during the regular workweek, are on twenty-four-hour calls otherwise and are responsible for monitoring both rainfall amounts and canal levels. Normally, one full-time operator is assigned to each station.
