PHASE II OF THE FLOOD RESPONSE PLAN INITIATED TODAY ON THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI RIVER
BELLE CHASSE, LA – According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Mississippi River at the Carrollton gauge is expected to rise to 15.0 feet within the next couple of days. The Corps has initiated Phase II of the Flood Response Plan on the lower Mississippi River Levee System.
Starting immediately the Mississippi River levees throughout Plaquemines Parish will be inspected 7 days a week. During this time of high river levels all unauthorized motor vehicles are prohibited from traveling along the Mississippi River levees. This includes ATVs and other off road vehicles.
The US Army Corps of Engineers also prohibits construction projects within 1500 feet of the levee system. Projects that were previously permitted must be shut down immediately.
We encourage residents and businesses of Plaquemines Parish to be vigilant of river levels and anything that may compromise the integrity of our levees. If you see anything that looks unsafe or anyone using a motorized vehicle on the levees do not hesitate to contact the 911 Center or the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office.
