Evacuations Called for Parts of Plaquemines Parish
Fri, Oct 04 2013 12:18 pm

As of 3:00 pm on Thursday, October 3, 2013, Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser has declared a state of emergency for Plaquemines Parish.

Beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 4, 2013, a mandatory evacuation is being called for the eastbank of Plaquemines Parish and all communities on the westbank with no levee protection. A voluntary evacuation is being called for the westbank of Plaquemines Parish from Ironton to Venice. If residents need help evacuating they should call the Plaquemines Parish Emergency Operations Center at 504-297-5670.

The Belle Chasse Auditorium will open at 6:00 p.m. as a place of shelter. Residents are asked to bring their own provisions to the shelter.

At this point in time, the Army Corps of Engineers does not expect the Highway 23 Floodgate at Oakville or the Highway 39 Floodgate at the St. Bernard/Plaquemines Parish line to be closed.

All Plaquemines Parish Recreation Department games are cancelled for this weekend.

Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to local news stations and the parish Website for the latest updates.

“We are fully prepared for a potential heavy rain event. All pump stations are operational and we have crews on stand-by,” said President Nungesser.
